As a teacher, bassist Cary Black is well known for his patient, intuitive, supportive, enthusiastic, and coherent teaching style. Described by Alan Senauke in Sing Out! magazine as “a musician’s musician”, Cary enjoys teaching bass to people of all ages in a wide variety of musical styles, including swing, pop, rock,blues, country, jazz, bluegrass, funk, folk, and Brazilian. He also taught music theory, musicianship, and improvisation at The Evergreen State College from 1994 to 2000.
Cary’s performance and recording credits include bass work with Howard Alden, Laurindo Almeida, Ernestine Anderson, Frankie Avalon, Cheryl Bentyne (Manhattan Transfer), Bob Brozman, Petula Clark, Mike Dowling, Nokie Edwards (Ventures), Nina Gerber, The Grand Ol’ Opry, Harry James Orchestra, Dan Hicks, Rob Ickes, Kathy Kallick, The Kingston Trio, Mark Lanegan, Laurie Lewis, Laura Love, Rose Maddox, John Miller, Mark Murphy, Scott Nygaard, Mollie O’Brien, Mark O'Connor, Dean Parks, Van Dyke Parks, Joe Pass, A Prairie Home Companion, Vicki Randle (Tonight Show Band), Peter Rowan, Kay Starr, Eddie “Cleanhead” Vinson, and Ernie Watts.
In addition to private lessons, Cary frequently teaches at adult music camps throughout the West, including the Puget Sound Guitar Workshop, California Coast Music Camp, Colorado Roots Music Camp, California Bluegrass Association Grass Valley Camp, Centrum Swing Workshop, Greater Yellowstone Music Camp, Bluegrass at the Beach, British Columbia Bluegrass Workshop, and Wintergrass Academy.
